The Witch-king of Angmar is a prominent antagonist in J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-earth fantasy world. He first appears as a Ringwraith, one of the nine mortal men corrupted by Sauron's Rings of Power, in *The Fellowship of the Ring*.
Originally a king of men, he became Sauron's most powerful servant and lieutenant. As the Lord of the Nazgûl, or Ringwraiths, he commanded Sauron's forces in various battles throughout Middle-earth's Second and Third Ages.
He established the realm of Angmar in the north, from which he waged war against the kingdoms of Arnor. His dominion was eventually defeated, but he returned to Mordor and led Sauron's armies in the War of the Ring. The Witch-king is famously slain by Éowyn and Meriadoc Brandybuck during the Battle of the Pelennor Fields, fulfilling the prophecy that "no man can kill him."
